Host Ruby on Rails in Canada.

Push a Rails app and Canner runs it in Montréal: Bundler installs your gems, assets precompile, and a Rails 8 app with Solid Cache, Queue and Cable gets its extra databases created for you. Ruby 4.0, 3.4 or 3.2, managed Postgres included, free to start.

Facts checked

Ruby on Rails on Canner

  • A Gemfile makes it a Ruby project. Rails starts with rails server, with RAILS_ENV=production.
  • Pick Ruby 4.0, 3.4 or 3.2 under Settings → Ruby version. A ruby line in the Gemfile or a newer .ruby-version moves the build for you.
  • rails assets:precompile runs as the build step when the app has an asset pipeline.
  • Rails 8 with Solid Cache, Queue or Cable: Canner reads config/database.yml, creates a database for each, and sets CACHE_DATABASE_URL, QUEUE_DATABASE_URL and CABLE_DATABASE_URL. The job queue runs inside Puma.
  • With no release command set, bundle exec rails db:prepare runs before each new version starts. Set your own, such as bundle exec rails db:migrate, under Settings → Build.
  • Add SECRET_KEY_BASE or RAILS_MASTER_KEY as an environment variable.

Check before you deploy

  • Allow your canner.app host or custom domain in config.hosts, or Rails rejects the requests.
  • Canner does not run Redis. Solid Cache, Queue and Cable replace it; Sidekiq needs a Redis you run elsewhere.
  • One process per project: run jobs inside the web process with Solid Queue or GoodJob.

Questions

Which Ruby versions are available?

Ruby 4.0, 3.4 and 3.2 (the default). Choose one in the project settings, or let the Gemfile’s ruby line pick it.

Does Sidekiq work?

Only with a Redis hosted elsewhere. For a Rails 8 app, Solid Queue runs inside Puma with no extra setup; GoodJob works the same way.

Is it free?

Starter is free and includes Postgres; projects sleep after 3 hours idle. Live is $9 a month and keeps two projects always on.

Deploy your Ruby on Rails app.

Starter is free, Postgres included. No card required.
